Bowflex 552 Dumbbells Review

Say goodbye to space hogging weight racks and bulky kit, thanks to the Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells. This nifty piece of gym equipment replaces 15 separate weight sets and combines them into one space saving weight (perfect for lockdown workouts).

We were gifted a pair of the Bowflex SelectTech 552 dumbbells to review during lockdown and here’s some of honest feedback:

Adjustable Weight

These hugely versatile adjustable dumbbells from Bowflex make working out easier than ever, as with a simple twist of the dial, you can move from heavy weight training to  light exercises ensuring a full body workout.

The Bowflex has a durable and long lasting moulding technology on the plates, they are not only strong and hard wearing, but they also ensure a smooth detachment from the bracket. Removing any loud raucous of metal, meaning you can perform a peaceful training session and focus on your training goals.

Simply turn the dial to select the weight you want, with each dumbbell adjusting from 2-24kg (5 to 52lbs).

One negative point is that the dumbbells can lock up and it took us a while to figure out how to fix it. We found a useful YouTube video that walks you through fixing them.

Using the App

These dumbbells also come with the ability to sync up your workout with the Bowflex SelectTech app to access the training tool to customise your experience and is available on iOS and Android. The app also features over 30 different exercises and over 80 different varieties, helping to inspire your workouts.

The app is such a great tool on it’s own, it’s nearly as great as the dumbells themselves! If you are into fitness and obsessed as us with tracking your progress, then you need to check this app out. I have researched and downloaded so many apps to try and track my routines and never found one that gives you workout suggestions as well as track your progress.

You can also look back at your journal to see what workouts you have done each week, access your progress over time and how much weight you have increased.

The Bowflex app lets you create your own routine using the exercises and then track the weight you used and number of sets / reps! (Even without the dumbbells, we would highly recommend the app).

Some negative points:

  • The dumbbells can lock up (but this is easily fixed)
  • With lower weight, they can be a tad bulky making some moves more difficult (again not a massive issue)

Positive features:

  • The dumbbells come on their own stand with the ability to lock them, keeping them child proof.
  • Space saving!
  • Easy dial turn to change weight
  • You get a full body workout
  • Wide range of workouts using the app
  • Durable mouldings for quieter workouts

Available from Fitness Superstore for £399 (sold as a pair).
