As the last stop on our Scottish adventure, this glamping retreat offered not only a serene escape but also a chance to reflect on the beauty of the Isle of Skye.
Familiar with the Wigwam Holidays experience, having previously reviewed the Shellstone venue, we were eager to explore what Wigwam Portree had in store.

Nestled within the serene crofting township of Achachork, Wigwam Holidays Portree offers a delightful escape on a working croft with a rich family history dating back to 1922. Home to 12 cows and 60 sheep, the croft provides a unique backdrop for a cosy glamping experience.

Inside the Wigwam Cabin, you’ll find a welcoming space featuring a double bed and a sofa bed, providing ample sleeping arrangements for a family or a group of friends. The ensuite bathroom with a shower adds a touch of convenience, ensuring privacy and comfort during your stay.
The built-in kitchen is a standout feature, equipped with a hob, kettle, toaster, microwave, and a small fridge. Everything you need to prepare meals for up to 4 people is at your fingertips, making it easy to enjoy home-cooked delights in the picturesque surroundings of Skye. Exploring the local area…
After a day filled with scenic drives, our energy levels were running low, prompting us to seek sustenance before our anticipated hike to the Storr.
Pizza at Caberfeidh Bar & Restaurant
Following a recommendation from a fellow traveller on Instagram, we found ourselves at Caberfeidh Bar & Restaurant – a gem nestled in the heart of Portree.
The promise of outstanding food was not an exaggeration; in fact, it exceeded our expectations. Opting for a pizza each, we indulged in a delightful feast complemented by the irresistible allure of truffle fries. The combination of flavours and the inviting ambiance provided the perfect fuel for our upcoming hike.
Caberfeidh Bar & Restaurant not only satisfied our hunger but also set the stage for a memorable evening against the backdrop of Skye’s enchanting landscapes.
Highland Cows
No Scottish road trip is truly complete without a rendezvous with the majestic Highland cows, and our journey to the Old Man of Storr presented the perfect opportunity. Having only glimpsed these iconic creatures from a distance during our previous Scottish adventure, this time around, we were determined to get up close and personal.
En route to the Old Man of Storr, our eyes were drawn to a group of Highland cows grazing peacefully. Unable to resist the allure, we pulled over, hoping for a closer look. To our delight, the cows ambled over to the fence, turning a routine stop into an enchanting encounter. As if straight from a dream, I found myself feeding one of these gentle giants, and the connection was nothing short of magical.
Amidst them, two adorable calves added to the charm, creating a picturesque scene that I eagerly captured through my lens. This unexpected interlude with Scotland’s Highland cows became a highlight, adding a touch of whimsy and wonder to our exploration of Skye’s rugged landscapes.
Sunset walk at The Old Man of Storr
With spirits lifted from the delightful encounter with the Highland cows, we eagerly embarked on the hike to The Old Man of Storr, a renowned icon of Skye’s rugged beauty. Celebrated for its breathtaking scenery and panoramic views, The Storr is a magnet for hikers, hill walkers, and photographers alike.
The trail, covering a distance of 3.8km, weaves through enchanting landscapes, creating a journey that is as captivating as the destination itself. The path, starting and ending at the car park, promised a rewarding adventure.
Our timing couldn’t have been more impeccable as we strategically planned to reach The Storr for sunset. The trek unfolded with every step offering a glimpse of Skye’s dramatic terrain. As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, we were treated to a spectacle of beauty. The Old Man of Storr, bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun, stood as a silent witness to the enchanting dance of light and shadow.
The average time to complete the walk may be 1 hour and 15 minutes, but with each pause to absorb the mesmerizing views, our journey was a tapestry of tranquillity and awe. The sunset walk at The Old Man of Storr was not just a hike; it was a symphony of nature, a perfect culmination to a day filled with wonders.
Quiraing walk
Before bidding adieu to the enchanting Isle of Skye and embarking on our 8-hour journey home, we seized the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the awe-inspiring Quiraing, just a short 30-minute drive from our Wigwam haven. The scenic drive itself was a prelude to the visual feast that awaited us.
Situated in the northern reaches of Skye, in the Trotternish region, Quiraing beckoned with promises of extraordinary landscapes. Accessible from the villages of Staffin or Uig via a single-track road, the journey to the starting point of the walk was an adventure in itself.
From the moment we stepped out of the car at the Quiraing car park, it was evident that something exceptional awaited. The panoramic views to the north showcased the imposing ‘Prison’ and the sheer cliff faces, setting the tone for an unforgettable trek.
The Quiraing walk, a loop that brings you back to the same point, covers a distance of 6.8km. With the average completion time of 2 hours (sans stops), the trail winds through landscapes that seem to belong to another realm.
