A weekend in Snowdonia with 3rd Rock; clothing review

3rd rock clothing

Recently the cool cats at 3rd Rock sent us some gear to test and review, so we thought we’d put it through its paces in a climbers playground, Snowdonia National Park.

Testing 3rd Rock clothing in Snowdonia

We arrived in Ogwen Valley at 6pm on the saturday with a planned sunset multi pitch climb on the North face of Glyder Fach on a route called Eastern Gully Ridge graded Moderate.

Me and James (my climbing partner) geared up at the van and changed into our 3rd Rock clothing. This weekend we would be testing out the Supernova climbing trousers and two fresh tees, the ‘Sun‘ tee and the ‘Jack‘ t shirt.

The Supernova trousers are a lightweight and reinforced design with maximum freedom of movement in mind. Straight away we noticed the reinforced knees and bum patch which was a great feature as we knew they had our back if we took a scrape!!

Once on they felt so comfortable and the awesome feeling of movement was already evident just hiking to our approach which took over an hour on steep terrain.

The T shirts we noticed straight away were a brilliant cut and fitted perfectly and the bright punchy sky blue colour of the ‘Sky’ tee was bold and eye catching, the ‘Jack’ tee has a striking vintage colour wash effect and the sickest skull and cross bone logo on the back with the words ‘climber to the bone’ across the back, we absolutely loved the super soft cotton used on both t shirts too and the fact that the skull and crossbone logo was all climbing rack gear making the image.

All T shirts are also printed locally with eco-friendly printing inks too which is an awesone touch from such a mega sustainable brand.

Multi pitch climbing performance

So the multi pitch began and from the go this route felt way more technical than moderate bordering on Vdiff territory, and this is where the ‘Supernova’ trousers came into there element. The curved leg seam, mega stretchy fabric and knee freedom offered from a diamond crotch became apparent instantly on big technical moves the face threw at us.

From the first pitch we had pretty small footholds and thats where another feature was a true blessing for us, the ankle puller cord, this ensures that you never lose sight of your feet during a send- which is a mega feature and not seen a lot on other trousers we usually wear for a climb.

We fired our way up the face and topped out to a stunning Snowdonia sunset on Glyder Fach then descended to the van for refuel and sleep ready for another big day on Sunday.

Testing on sport routes

Sunday morning we wake up to coffee and breakfast at the van and do gear checks before heading up to a place called Dinorwic Quarry for some epic sport routes.

Once again me and James hit the routes hard and once again the 3rd Rock gear delivered, we both said how we wont want to wear any other trousers but the 3rd Rock ones during a climb because of the flexibility of the supernova trousers.

Another thing we noticed was great breathability as it was a real hot day at Dinorwic and the trousers felt so light and airy.

We head down from Dinorwic and have lunch and chill, James pumping the music from the van bringing great vibes, and bacon sarnies at a spot called Llyn Padarn which is a huge lake in Snowdonia with unreal views of the mountains.

That evening we are still feeling full of energy so we head to a spot called the Rac boulders which is located between the top of Llanberis Pass and Capel Curig offering quality problems on great rock.

We get the mat out and hit various grades as the sun comes down on an atmospheric evening in Snowdonia. We sit down and have a chat together about the 3rd Rock gear and we have to say we were impressed!

Every cut feels made to move in the clothing and alot of thought during design has cleary went into it.

The comfort of the clothing too was unreal and we absolutely love the bold designs and the fact that all 3rd Rocks products are ethically produced.

There is so much more confidence on rock when wearing the right gear and the stretchy supernova trousers are now my go to choice for a send.

We end the evening parked up next to Llynnau Mymbyr a huge lake in Capel Curig with epic views of the Snowdon Massif and have beers udner the stars reflecting on an awesome weekend of sends.
