Prep Perfect: How to Get Out of a Meal Prep Plateau

How to Get Out of a Meal Prep Plateau - Prep Perfect

Meal prepping is a great way of ensuring you’re getting the right nutrition, saving money, and staying organised – especially if you work the typical 9-5 routine.

But, we all know that to prep perfect meals can often become tedious and boring. Once we find a meal we like and is easy to prepare, we can exhaust its usefulness or our desire for it. As a result, we end up relying on the same food groups, and finding meals less appetising. To help get you back on track, we’ve pulled together some top tips for getting out of your meal prep plateau.

Spice things up to prep perfect meals:

Most people tend to stick to the same recipes when cooking their favourite meals, often without ever needing much seasoning – the simple life is good, right? And simple flavours, when combined effectively, can make for some fantastic meals.

However, eating the same meals day-in-day-out can cause a meal prep plateau. Introducing some spice into your meal prepping, even if only one or two, can really make a difference to the power of your meals.

What’s more, you don’t just have to add to the hot ones! Spices such as turmeric or nutmeg can really emphasise vegetables such as sweet potatoes, red onions, carrots, and broccoli, making a great addition to any meal.

Get zesty with your ingredients:

Unless you’re making a dessert, zest can be a very under-utilised ingredient. Zest can give that extra zing to your meals, cutting through flavours which you might not have tried together before, giving a fresh twist to your average recipe.

Meals such as salads, risotto, and pasta can be ‘brightened’ with a little citrus – just make sure you add it at the end to retain the oomph.

And if you’ve over-done the citrus during cooking, try adding a tiny amount of baking soda to counteract the bitterness.

Make it colourful:

It might sound a bit simple, but varying the colours of the foods which we consume is extremely beneficial.

This not only ensures we are eating a better variety of food groups, but it makes meals look far more appetising which is essential for getting over the meal prep slump.

Try breaking down your food groups into cars, proteins, and veggies, and having a play around with some different combinations.

Make sure to include 3 types of veg, two types of protein and one grain or starch into each meal for balanced macro-nutrients.
